    What Is PGT-A?

    PGT-A (preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy) is a laboratory procedure used during IVF to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before transfer. It involves biopsying cells from the trophectoderm of a blastocyst-stage embryo.

    Clinical significance

    PGT-A identifies embryos with the correct number of chromosomes (euploid), which have a significantly higher probability of implantation and live birth. It does not cause attrition: it reveals it by identifying embryos that would have failed to implant or miscarried.

    Common confusion

    PGT-A is sometimes confused with PGT-M (which tests for specific genetic diseases) or PGT-SR (which tests for structural chromosomal rearrangements). PGT-A screens only for whole-chromosome gains or losses.
