What Is an Embryo Biopsy?
An embryo biopsy is a laboratory procedure in which a small number of cells are removed from an embryo for genetic testing, typically performed at the blastocyst stage by sampling cells from the trophectoderm.
Clinical significance
Embryo biopsy is the necessary first step for PGT-A, PGT-M, and PGT-SR testing. Trophectoderm biopsy at the blastocyst stage is preferred because it samples cells destined for the placenta rather than the inner cell mass that forms the fetus, and survival rates after biopsy exceed 95% in experienced laboratories.
Common confusion
Embryo biopsy does not harm the developing fetus. The cells removed are from the outer layer (trophectoderm), and embryos routinely survive and implant normally after the procedure.
