What Is Mini IVF?

Mini IVF, also called minimal stimulation IVF, uses lower doses of fertility medications to produce a small number of eggs rather than the larger cohorts targeted in conventional IVF.

How Mini IVF Works

Mini IVF protocols typically use oral medications such as clomiphene or letrozole, sometimes combined with low-dose injectable hormones. The goal is to retrieve three to five eggs rather than the 10 to 20 eggs often targeted in conventional stimulation.

Potential Advantages

Mini IVF involves lower medication costs, reduced risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), and a shorter stimulation period. It may be appropriate for patients with low ovarian reserve who are unlikely to produce many eggs regardless of dose.

Limitations

Fewer eggs mean fewer embryos and fewer options for genetic testing. Multiple mini IVF cycles may be needed to achieve results comparable to one conventional cycle.
