What Is Natural Cycle IVF?
Natural cycle IVF is a form of in vitro fertilization that retrieves the single egg the body naturally selects each month, without using stimulation medications.
How It Differs from Conventional IVF
In conventional IVF, hormone medications stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. In natural cycle IVF, no stimulation drugs are used. The doctor monitors the naturally developing follicle and retrieves one egg when it is mature.
When Natural Cycle IVF Is Considered
Natural cycle IVF may be considered for patients who cannot tolerate stimulation medications, patients with very low ovarian reserve who produce one follicle regardless of stimulation, and patients who prefer to avoid hormone injections.
Limitations
Because only one egg is retrieved per cycle, there is a higher chance of cycle cancellation and fewer embryos available for selection or testing. Multiple cycles may be needed to accumulate embryos.
