What Is Embryo Viability?
Embryo viability refers to an embryo's capacity to continue developing and potentially result in a live birth. Viability is assessed using morphological grading, developmental timing, and, when available, genetic testing results.
Clinical significance
Determining embryo viability helps clinicians select the most promising embryos for transfer. Multiple factors contribute to viability, including chromosomal status, cell number, fragmentation level, and blastocyst expansion.
Common confusion
A viable embryo is not guaranteed to result in pregnancy. Viability reflects potential, not certainty, and is influenced by both embryo and uterine factors.
