    Surrogate Health Insurance

Health insurance carried by the gestational carrier that covers medical care during pregnancy. Some policies allow surrogacy pregnancies and others exclude them. Intended parents often need to confirm coverage before a transfer takes place.

    Why it matters

Not all health insurance policies treat surrogacy pregnancies the same way. Some explicitly exclude coverage for pregnancies carried on behalf of another person. If the surrogate's existing policy does not cover the pregnancy, medical bills become the responsibility of the intended parents. Confirming coverage before embryo transfer prevents unexpected financial exposure.

    Common confusion

Many intended parents assume that if a surrogate has health insurance, the pregnancy is covered. This is not always true. Policy exclusions for surrogacy are common and often buried in contract language.
