Specialty Pharmacy
A specialty pharmacy is a pharmacy that dispenses complex or high-cost medications, including fertility drugs such as gonadotropins. Specialty pharmacies operate under different manufacturer contracts, which is why the same medication can have significantly different prices at different pharmacies.
How they work for IVF
Most IVF clinics recommend a preferred specialty pharmacy, but patients are not required to use it. Patients can request quotes from multiple specialty pharmacies to compare prices. Price differences of $500 to $2,000 for the same medication protocol are common.
What to ask
When comparing specialty pharmacies, ask about self-pay versus insurance pricing, pen overfill (extra medication in injectable pens), expiration dates, and shipping costs. Overnight refrigerated shipping can add $100 or more.
