Gonadotropins
Gonadotropins are hormone medications used during IVF to stimulate the ovaries to develop multiple follicles. Common examples include Gonal-F (follitropin alfa) and Follistim (follitropin beta).
How they are used
Gonadotropins are injectable medications administered daily during the stimulation phase of IVF, typically for 8 to 14 days. They stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs rather than the single egg that develops in a natural cycle.
Cost considerations
Gonadotropins are one of the most expensive components of IVF treatment. Prices vary significantly between specialty pharmacies. Patients are allowed to compare quotes from multiple pharmacies before ordering.
