Prior Authorization
Prior authorization is approval required from an insurance company before certain medications, treatments, or procedures are covered. Without prior authorization, the insurance company may deny the claim and the patient becomes responsible for the full cost.
How it affects IVF
Many insurance plans require prior authorization for fertility medications and IVF procedures. The process can take several days to several weeks. Patients should confirm prior authorization requirements before ordering medications to avoid delays or denied coverage.
What happens without it
If a patient orders medications or undergoes a procedure without obtaining required prior authorization, the insurance company may deny the claim entirely. The patient would then be responsible for the full cost, which can be thousands of dollars for fertility medications.
