    What Is Progesterone in Fertility?

Progesterone is a hormone essential for preparing the uterine lining for embryo implantation and maintaining early pregnancy. In IVF, progesterone supplementation is standard after egg retrieval to support the luteal phase.

    Clinical significance

After egg retrieval, the natural progesterone-producing mechanism (the corpus luteum) may be insufficient due to the hormonal suppression used during stimulation. Progesterone supplementation: via injections, vaginal suppositories, or oral formulations, is prescribed to ensure the endometrium remains receptive for embryo implantation.

    Common confusion

The existing glossary entry covers progesterone broadly. This entry specifically addresses progesterone's role in IVF luteal support protocols and frozen embryo transfer preparation.
