NICU Care
Neonatal intensive care provided if a baby needs additional medical support after birth. NICU stays can significantly increase total medical costs.
When NICU is needed
NICU care is required when a newborn has breathing difficulties, low birth weight, premature birth, infections, or other conditions that need close monitoring. In surrogacy, NICU costs are typically the responsibility of the intended parents.
Cost structure
NICU care in the United States averages $3,000 to $3,500 per day. A short stay of a few days may cost $10,000 to $20,000. Extended stays for premature infants can exceed $100,000. Insurance coverage and hospital billing practices affect the final amount.
