What Is Embryo Ploidy?
Embryo ploidy refers to the chromosomal status of an embryo: specifically whether it contains the correct number of chromosomes (euploid), an incorrect number (aneuploid), or a mixture of both (mosaic).
Clinical significance
Ploidy status is determined through PGT-A and is one of the strongest predictors of implantation success and live birth. Euploid embryos have the highest probability of successful transfer, while aneuploid embryos are typically not transferred.
Common confusion
Ploidy is about chromosome number, not gene mutations. An embryo can be euploid (correct chromosome count) but still carry specific genetic mutations that PGT-A does not detect.
