What Is a Dual Trigger?

A dual trigger is a protocol in IVF that combines both a GnRH agonist and a low-dose hCG injection to induce final oocyte maturation, used as an alternative to a standard hCG-only trigger in certain clinical scenarios.

Clinical significance

Dual triggers may be used to reduce OHSS risk in high-responder patients while still ensuring adequate oocyte maturation. Some studies suggest dual triggers may improve oocyte yield and maturity rates compared to either trigger alone in select patient populations.

Common confusion

A dual trigger is not the same as a GnRH agonist trigger alone (which is used primarily for OHSS prevention with freeze-all protocols). The dual approach combines both mechanisms to balance safety and efficacy.
