What Is a Day 3 Embryo (Cleavage Stage)?

A day 3 embryo, also called a cleavage-stage embryo, is an embryo that has developed for approximately three days after fertilization and typically consists of six to eight cells.

    Clinical significance

IVF laboratories assess embryo development at this stage to determine whether embryos should be transferred, biopsied, or cultured further to the blastocyst stage. Development at day 3 can provide early insight into embryo viability.

    Common confusion

Some people assume all embryos should progress beyond day 3. In practice, many embryos naturally stop developing at this stage as part of normal biological attrition.
