What Is Assisted Hatching?
Assisted hatching is a laboratory technique in which the zona pellucida surrounding an embryo is thinned or opened using mechanical, chemical, or laser methods to help the embryo hatch before implantation.
Clinical significance
Some IVF programs use assisted hatching in selected cases, such as previous implantation failure or embryos with a thick zona pellucida, although evidence for routine benefit is mixed.
Common confusion
It is sometimes believed that assisted hatching guarantees implantation, but outcomes vary and the procedure may only benefit specific patient groups.
