Cesarean Section
A surgical delivery method that can increase hospital costs and recovery time compared with vaginal delivery.
Clinical context
A cesarean section involves delivering the baby through a surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus. It may be planned in advance or performed as an emergency procedure during labor. In surrogacy, the surrogate's medical team determines whether a cesarean is necessary.
Financial impact
Cesarean deliveries cost more than vaginal births due to surgical fees, anesthesia, and longer hospital stays. The surrogate also requires additional recovery time, which may affect postpartum compensation and care costs.
