    What Is Antral Follicle Count?

Antral follicle count, or AFC, is the number of small resting follicles visible on a transvaginal ultrasound, used to estimate ovarian reserve.

    How AFC Is Measured

During a baseline ultrasound, typically performed on cycle day 2 or 3, a doctor counts the small follicles (2 to 10 mm) visible on each ovary. A higher count generally suggests more eggs available for stimulation.

    Why It Matters in IVF

AFC helps doctors predict how the ovaries will respond to stimulation medications. Combined with AMH, it is one of the most reliable markers for estimating egg yield during retrieval.
