What Is a Reproductive Endocrinologist?
A reproductive endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in fertility medicine and reproductive hormones.
Training and Qualifications
A reproductive endocrinologist (RE) completes medical school, a four-year obstetrics and gynecology residency, and a two- to three-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. Board certification requires passing written and oral examinations. REs are trained in hormonal disorders, surgical fertility treatments, and assisted reproductive technologies including IVF.
Role in IVF Treatment
The RE oversees the clinical aspects of IVF: designing stimulation protocols, monitoring follicle development, performing egg retrievals, and managing embryo transfers. They interpret diagnostic results, adjust medication dosages, and make decisions about cycle management. The RE works alongside embryologists who handle the laboratory component of IVF.
