NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit)
A NICU is a hospital unit that provides intensive medical care for premature or medically fragile newborns. NICU care is the single largest financial risk in the fertility journey for intended parents, particularly those using surrogacy or IVF with multiples.
Levels of care
NICUs are classified by level. Level II units handle minor prematurity with stays of 7 to 14 days, typically costing $20,000 to $70,000. Level III and IV units handle major prematurity requiring ventilators, 24/7 nursing, and specialized surgery, with costs ranging from $100,000 to over $1,000,000.
Why it matters for IVF families
IVF pregnancies carry a higher rate of multiple gestations (twins, triplets), which significantly increases the risk of premature birth and NICU admission. Understanding NICU cost exposure is essential for financial planning.
