What Is Genetic Counseling?
Genetic counseling is a professional healthcare service that helps individuals and couples understand genetic testing options, interpret results, and make informed reproductive decisions based on their genetic risk profile.
Clinical significance
Genetic counseling is recommended before and after PGT testing, when carrier screening reveals a genetic condition, when mosaic embryo transfer is being considered, or when there is a family history of genetic disorders. Counselors help patients understand the implications, limitations, and uncertainties of genetic test results.
Common confusion
Genetic counseling is not genetic testing. Counselors interpret and explain results but do not perform the laboratory testing itself. They provide the clinical context needed for informed decision-making.
