What Is Attrition in IVF?
Attrition in IVF refers to the progressive biological loss of reproductive material at each stage of the IVF process: from egg retrieval through fertilisation, embryo development, genetic testing, and transfer. Attrition is a normal feature of human reproduction, not a sign of clinical failure.
Clinical significance
Attrition is the reason that 15 retrieved eggs may yield only 1–2 genetically normal embryos. Understanding attrition helps patients interpret IVF outcomes realistically and plan for multiple cycles when necessary.
Common confusion
Many patients interpret attrition as failure. In reality, attrition reflects the biological filtering that occurs naturally in reproduction. IVF simply makes this visible.
