What Is a Semen Analysis?
A semen analysis is a laboratory test that evaluates sperm count, movement, and shape to assess male fertility.
What a Semen Analysis Measures
The test evaluates several parameters: sperm concentration (number per milliliter), total motility (percentage that move), progressive motility (percentage that move forward), and morphology (percentage with normal shape). Volume and pH of the semen are also assessed.
Why It Matters in IVF
Semen analysis results help determine whether conventional IVF or ICSI is needed for fertilization. Low sperm count or poor motility typically indicates that ICSI should be used.
