IVF Retrieval Cycle
A retrieval cycle is an IVF cycle that includes ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. It produces a cohort of oocytes from which embryos may be derived. Outcomes are best evaluated at the cohort level across all transfers generated from a single retrieval.
What a Retrieval Cycle Includes
A retrieval cycle encompasses the full stimulation phase (8 to 14 days of injectable medications), monitoring appointments, trigger injection, and the egg retrieval procedure. The oocytes collected form the starting cohort. All subsequent steps: fertilization, culture, testing, and transfers, derive from this cohort. Some patients undergo multiple retrieval cycles before any transfers (embryo banking).
Biological Constraints
Retrieval yield varies by age, ovarian reserve, protocol, and individual response. The attrition from retrieved eggs to transferable embryos is significant and expected. Evaluating outcomes per retrieval rather than per transfer provides a more accurate picture of IVF probability because it accounts for patients who never reach the transfer stage.
